Chinese Summer School

Course Overview and Goals

Intended for students who have taken a year of Chinese, there will be a training program where they will learn Chinese intensively and further improve their language skills. For anyone aspiring to a career based in East Asia, Chinese will be a prerequisite to not just learning Chinese culture and society but being part of global exchange of knowledge as well. This course aims to train students' Chinese skill in China and utilize methods similar to fieldwork to improve their language skills.

Course Plan

1. Intensive Chinese Training
At the Institute for International Students at Nanjing University, students will attend three weeks of intensive language training focused on their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The classes are jointly conducted by faculty members at the Center for Global Communication Strategies and Nanjing University. Twenty students will be divided into two small classes of ten, and from Monday to Friday they will learn Chinese for three to four hours in each morning, and in the afternoon they will attend lectures or go on a field trip for Chinese Affairs. Instruction will be given by faculty members at the University of Tokyo's Center for Global Communication Strategies and faculty members at Nanjing University.

2. Week 4 in August
There will be lectures on Chinese Affairs (in Chinese) and related field trips at Renmin University of China  in Beijing.

Limit to Student Number

There will be a selection test if more than 20 students wish to participate.

Selection Test

May 7 (Tue) 6th period  Room 1214
Those who wish will take a selection test after signing up for the course. If you are not selected, please cancel your registration during the registration change period from May 14 (Tue) to May 15 (Wed).

Cost

To be announced (currently arrangement is underway with our colleagues in China). There will be a scholarship available, (thanks to ZENSHO CO. LTD.). An estimated cost for each participant is below 50,000 JPY.
