Concerning Illnesses Related to Unusual Dietary Habits: Focusing on Eating Disorder

Eating disorders are a range of illnesses related to unusual dietary habits. The prevalence rate is high in Westernized societies and this fact suggests that it is affected by culture and society. It is reported that the numbers of patients with eating disorders have been on the increase in Japan, particularly for women. As it involves a risk of infertility, eating disorders have become an important issue in relation to the declining birthrate. The most common types of eating disorder include Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder but these conditions are still not well understood. Therefore, these lectures will investigate what these conditions are; how they may be influenced by society or culture; and finally how they might be treated, with reference to some case studies.
