【2016年度前期TLP(トライリンガルプログラム)中国語の修了式が行われました】

TLP final speech Sawako Hirata

Firstly, I would like to show my gratitude to the teachers, distinguished guests and my peers who are present today.

The trilingual language program was a series of struggles for me from the beginning. The pronunciation of Chinese was so unfamiliar and it was quite a challenging task to learn all of them by heart. Also, surrounded by my classmates who were excellent at English and various other fields, I actually had a hard time dealing with my sense of inferiority.

As we proceeded in studying the grammar and vocabulary, learning Chinese became even more difficult for me. It was hard to balance the time between other fields of study and Chinese, and I always wished I had enough time to do both.

In fact, those struggles make me feel even more proud of completing this program today. This could not have been achieved without the help of our teachers and my peers.

Our teachers, with their warm heart and passion, kindly helped us explore the various spheres of the Chinese language. They patiently corrected our pronunciation, checked our writing tasks and grammar, and always welcomed our questions. If it were not for their sincere attitude, I would never have managed to complete this program.

My peers have kept my motivation towards learning Chinese. Being able to study with my brilliant, diligent and open-minded peers was a great pleasure for me. Though we all had different reasons for studying Chinese, we had our passion in common. Seeing them both studying Chinese hard and actively engaging in other activities have gave me power and courage to carry on.

On completing this program, I also feel the preciousness of the experiences and achievements through TLP. The days we spent at winter school in Sydney and summer school in Nanjing were invaluable for me. Through those experiences, we learned cross-cultural communication and the real life in other countries. The experience of living in Chinese society for 3 weeks provided us with various chances to speak and listen to the Chinese language with ordinary Chinese people, which was quite challenging but greatly enhanced our Chinese skills. Also, walking around the town and visiting many places, learning the culture and getting to know many Chinese friends was a precious experience for us who have had or nurtured our interests toward China. Also, personally, I was able to pass HSK 5th grade, which meets the criteria necessary for being accepted to a Chinese university. When meeting friends from China on occasions of extra curricular activities, I had tried to spoke at least a few Chinese phrases so that they may feel closer to me. After all, there are things that can't be said other than in our mother tongue, and I believe my Chinese ability has greatly helped me to make deeper connection with my Chinese friends. In fact, those experiences have opened a door to the deep interests in International society, Chinese society and the rule of law. As I proceed into my major, which is law, I am sure I will cherish those interests.

Finally, on completing this program, I would like to express deep gratitude to all the teachers and the staff involved in TLP, the guests who are attending today, and my peers who are finishing this program together. Though we will be pursuing different paths or majors from now on, I believe we will always have our experiences and memories of this wonderful program with us.

Thank you.
