Reconsidering “Ie”: A History of Houses of “Farmers” in China, Japan and India
What is a house? Is it equal to a family or a relative? What kinds of elements do prescribe the system of Ie, culture or functions? Taking these questions into account, in this lecture, I am going to talk about Ie for Japanese people through a comparison of the history of houses of “farmers” in China, Japan and India. I hope that the participants will reconsider relative, family and Ie by knowing a history of Ie in Japan, which uniquely developed under the influence of Ie in China.

- Nanami Toishi obtained a PhD from the Laboratory of Agricultural History, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the University of Tokyo in 2007. Since November 2013, she has been a Lecturer of the Laboratory of Agricultural History, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the University of Tokyo. Her topics are the history of rural society and family, especially focussing on Pre-modern Japan and India.
