I Want to Experience Joint Fieldwork with Chinese Students

Outline: In March every year, we select 20 highly motivated students through their essays, who will then be sent to Nanjing University, China, in two groups over the period of two weeks, and conduct fieldwork where they explore the city of Nanjing with students at Nanjing University to “re-discover” how people in the city lead their lives. It is our hope that the students will gain a genuine understanding and imaginative capacity for how people live and think, by exposing themselves to the ways of life for people in Nanning. This will provide them an opportunity to aim at becoming “knowledge-producers” who seek to experience something firsthand and find their own perspectives and opinions, as opposed to “knowledge-consumers” who believe what books and other media outlets tell them.
